A Intuitive Pilates programme run by a Breast Cancer Exercise Specialist, designed to help with post-surgery recovery.
The Pink Ribbon Program is a specialist Pilates based programme dedicated to breast cancer rehabilitation. I was one of the first Pink Ribbon Program teachers in the country, having taken the training in 2012 when it first came to the UK.
I usually see those who have gone through breast cancer surgery around 2 to 3 weeks after they have been discharged from hospital, or as soon as their medical team has said it is ok for them to return to exercise.
An assessment usually takes place and then a one to one programme is outlined, or depending on the student, they may go straight into an Intuitive Pilates class where exercises will be modified accordingly according to the Pink Ribbon Program principles.
Whichever route is undertaken you will find that you quickly increase your mobility, flexibility and strength around your shoulders, arms and chest, which are usually the most affected areas after breast cancer treatment. If a student has undergone reconstruction surgery following a mastectomy, then Intuitive Pilates alongside the Pink Ribbon Program will enable the student to reconnect and rewire the various muscle groups affected in order to tone and strengthen the whole body.
The Back4Good Programme is specifically designed for those experiencing back pain from acute to chronic back pain, to those recovering from spinal surgery. As a Back4Good Practitioner having gained the Body Control Pilates Level 4 Back Pain certification I can advise my students on the prevention and management of back pain.
A student would have an initial assessment so that I can see how they organise themselves in standing and how they move and to get a better understanding about their back pain in order to work out a suitable programme for them. Once in an Intuitive Pilates class, I can modify and adapt exercises accordingly whilst guiding students to understand that movement is key to the health of their spine and that where they feel the pain is the symptom not the source. Through correct movement a reorganisation of the skeletal structure is found and the student feels the reduction in pain and eventually becomes pain free.
I devised Intuitive Pilates to be able to rehabilitate students who come to be with a variety of conditions including breast cancer rehabilitation and chronic back pain/spinal injury. I have infused my classes with principles and movements of The Feldenkrais Method®, The Child’Space Method® and Conscious Embodiment because these offer what I feel is the missing link in traditional Pilates classes. Movement is multi-dimensional and we need to go back to our developmental roots if we want to make our movement easier and more efficient to avoid injury. Intuitive Pilates delivers all of this and is therefore suitable for those needing rehabilitation.
